Despite the fact that some of the industry’s biggest players are constantly on the lookout for the “next big thing,” the sneaker scene is saturated with nostalgia-driven offerings.
On the NIKE, Inc. front, propositions from the 1990s such as the Nike Air Trainer SC High (’90) and Air Jordan 11 (’95) have been reintroduced in all-new colorways over the last seven days. The latter – which has established itself as a holiday season staple over the last decade – will reportedly abandon original and heritage-inspired reissues in favour of a “Cherry” aesthetic that has divided many internet observers. The Nike Air Force 1′s 40th anniversary edition also featured a healthy mix of old school and new school looks.
While the lawsuit is not directly related to footwear innovation, the Beaverton, Oregon-based institution sued StockX, the popular after-market platform, for offering “unauthorised” non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The Swoosh’s acquisition of RTFKT and participation in Roblox’s virtual world demonstrate that it is more than willing to enter the burgeoning space, but its lawsuit against StockX demonstrates that it wishes to do so on its own terms.
Apart from the Jumpman and swoosh, adidas, New Balance, and Reebok have all taken their own trips down memory lane. While nostalgia for basketball continues to dominate some of these brands’ propositions (e.g., the New Balance 550), partners like Ye – formerly known as “Kanye West” – continue to think ahead through his adidas Yeezy line. Now, we hope the former “Mr. West” finds the peace he requires to move on from his social media rants about his familial turmoil.
