Despite the fact that some individuals – most notably Ye, the person formerly known as “Kanye West” – have championed a “Black Future Month” movement, February remains widely recognised as Black History Month in the United States of America. To kick off the 28-day celebration, several of the sneaker industry’s biggest names have begun releasing coordinating merchandise. The latest? A black and gold New Balance 990v5.
Similar to other footwear produced for B.H.M., the newly-surfaced pair opts for a rather tonal, pitch-dark palette, which allows for any contrasting hue to stand out even more. Previously, New Balance drew inspiration from gospel choirs, which are held in the highest regard in the Black community, but its latest offering foregoes any purple or cream hues in favour of a duo that speaks to Black excellence. The profile “N” logos, “990” branding on the lateral heel and tongue, and mesh underlays around the collar all contribute to a more subdued interpretation of the aforementioned luxury finish, while the tried-and-true ENCAP-cushioned sole unit also takes a back seat.
