Despite the release and teasing of hundreds of shoes over the last week, sneaker news was dominated by the severance of Ye’s association with adidas.
Regardless of which side of the argument you’re on, Kanye West’s split with adidas will affect not just the footwear industry but also neighboring ones. Retailers have been asked to remove all adidas Yeezy goods off sales floors and to halt the sale of any stockroom items, but the company has suggested that it would restart sales of these products without the Yeezy logo at some time in the future.
Mr. West has already apologized for the same anti-Semitic remarks that caused adidas to sever ties with him, but the effort comes a bit too late. The Three Stripes had been criticized for not terminating connections with the 45-year-old artist, with some netizens condemning its inaction during earlier difficult periods in Ye’s public life (such as the “slavery was a choice” remarks he made at TMZ’s headquarters in 2018). However, the Three Stripes should be OK in the long run as it continues to identify economic prospects in the sport and fashion industries.
