Once a mainstay on basketball courts, the Nike Vandal has been left relatively in the dark since its 1985 cameo in Back To the Future. And while the John Elliott Vandal High captured some of the attention brought upon the model by Doc Brown, the basketball-turned-lifestyle sneaker has watched from the sidelines as the comparable Air Force 1 and Air Jordan 1 have garnered (arguably) unrivaled popularity. The Vandalised, however, is trying to change that.
Launched in 2019, the Vandalised deconstructively reinterprets the original Vandal from 1984 into a sneaker-boot hybrid for women. Toe boxes and tongues, which feature toggle lacing systems, don a fashion-forward suede, while the rest of the asymmetrical upper is constructed out of thin tumbled leather. Split profile Swooshes alternate between greens and oranges, as well as reds and blues, which both combine on lateral sides to resemble the Air Max 97 “Seoul” from Nike’s “On Air” workshop. The Vandal’s original collar height is captured on this women’s model, but midsoles go taller in all their crepe-like, bone-colored glory.
Take a closer look at the Vandalised here below while you wait for this subtly-accented iteration to hit Nike.com for $130 USD.
