The Vibrant Red Animates The Air Bubbles on this Nike Air Max 95

Sergio Lozano, a young designer from Beaverton, Oregon, helped a growing sportswear company enter the next 27 years of its life in 1995 by abandoning a familiar design language in favour of something almost jarring. How? The Nike Air Max 95 is a case in point.

Lozano introduced a new Air Max solution and colour palette to Nike’s lineup at the time, inspired by both human anatomy and natural erosion found in places like the Grand Canyon. The brand’s executives were sceptical that consumers would gravitate toward a predominantly grey running model, but savvy and casual enthusiasts alike quickly proved them wrong. The 95’s layered upper has enabled dozens of unique colour combinations, though its most recent look features a mix of traditional white, grey, red, and black. Vamp overlays almost exclusively feature the pair’s brightest hues, while the synthetic leather, mesh, and cotton components that make up the upper opt for a more “colourless” appearance. Underfoot, sole units tell a similar storey, but their branding on the outsole deviates from its standard configuration, just as logos on the tongue’s top do. It’s possible that the selection was influenced by the expanded Nike Sportswear Collection, but that remains to be seen.

Nike has not yet announced a firm release date for the sneakers on Nike.com, but that is likely to change as summer approaches. While you wait, take a look ahead at an early look at the Air Max 95.

In other sneaker news, the Air Griffey Max 1 “Wheat” is scheduled to release.
