For those who are not part of the “community,” sneakers may simply be utilitarian items that should not command thousands of dollars on any market. However, for those who have been bitten by the “bug,” shoes can mean much more. A recently-resurfaced Nike Dunk Low exemplifies the latter group, as the positive reminder “on the bright side” appears on the shoe’s right sock liner.
Though they’re part of a larger Nike Sportswear collection, the upcoming pair bears little resemblance to recent offerings in terms of aesthetics. A speckled black outsole hints at the latest Nike Dunk’s commitment to sustainability, which is bolstered by the upper’s “random” mix of corduroy, suede, nylon, and canvas. At the mid-foot, heel, and spine, frayed detailing complements embroidered flower-like patches that scream “springtime.” The “on the bright side” message may refer to the construction of the sneakers, as “trash” was transformed into a wearable, compelling footwear option. Another possibility is that the four-letter phrase was coined for Valentine’s Day to remind wearers that there is always a “bright side” to heartbreak. Whatever the inspiration for the shoes, the mix of greys and navy that dominates the latest interpretation of Peter Moore’s 37-year-old design is certain to add fuel to the model’s “moment.”
